Combat System???

What is my favorite Combat System? Role Play!!! For many reasons: low lag, makes it so it is not just point and click, uses your mind and allows you to fight true to your character (awesome flips, clashing sabers with cold stares, talking smack as you fight, etc).

Yes, combat systems have their place. They can mix things up and are fun in big group fights. But one on one? Role Play wins every time. You get to have nice long, fun fights with no lag! A few simple hints:

1) Stay true to your character. If you are a Padawan, and go up against a Sith Lord or a Mandalorian with experience....chances are you will lose the fight. Win/Lose....it is all in good fun.

2) If characters of equal abilities/experience go against each other, you will have a nice long RP fight. If you cannot decide who will lose or win, use some form of RP dice to help.

3) Give the other person a chance to counter your attack.

4) Force Users...yes, you can block blaster fire. We have all seen it in the movies. But if a group of gunners are firing at you at the same time...you are most likely toast.

5) Gunners...sure, a group of you can be most effective. However, you go one on one against a strong Force User...chances are you will be toast.

6) Have fun! Be imaginative!

I do appreciate this point of view and it could indeed deal with some griefer situations that you can have with some combat systems.

However, using dice, text fighting etc just takes away the point of combat in my eyes.

Sure, a gunner will have a problem going one on one with a jedi...but..that forces the gunner to work harder, evade attacks and try and outsmart the opponent...i mean if are including Mandos as gunners...im sure plenty of them will tell us they could wipe out Jedis given the chance with the other advantages they have.
Also, if gunners arent a strong tool in the battle against force users, then this will mean greater planning by the commanders making the RP bigger.

What you do in the heat of the battle is what makes it exciting, you may get wiped out...you may escape..you may defeat an opponent when it looked unlikely...building up some skill.

Text is good for RP conversation, that adds to the story of course..and you can try to talk during combat.

Text combat can become stale, if you find yourself using what will become 'standard' phrases etc...when you start to fight it has to be spontaneous...in my eyes thats what is fun.

I was never the greatest at lightsaber duelling, part of the reason that i went from a Sentinel to a consular...but that also opened up my Jedi character and im pleased that happened at the time.

Last thing, if its the RP thats important, why do we need to have such combat systems such as DCS?...we have RP rules and
admins etc.

Surely more basic systems such as RCS will mean less lag and be honest - things werent all that bad in SWRP when we were all using RCS!

True griefers reset etc but they can be booted from groups and banned...

Imagination in creating a roleplay and real guts and glory if there is real combat.

Be honest...you want to see your enemy on the floor after you have killed him dont you?!

Morten,

Thanks for your post. I am glad to see a comment here :). I will have to respectfully disagree with you.

First off, RCS is not less lag. In fact, it is more lag. RCS takes more controls which causes a lot of lag. I have had more problems with lag in big battles with RCS, than with DCS. I have talked with scripters and the majority of them say this is so.

But that is beside the point. The thing is, this is a RP game...not a first shooter shoot em up. You are limited in what you can do with any combat system. Often, the person that wins is the one who is better at playing video games.

But this is role play. I have had some of my best battles with text. It was definitely not stale. To me, stale is button mashing.

And I will be honest. When you have a big battle between say, 10 people, then yes, a combat system is loads of fun. But most combat is with a few people. And I still firmly believe, role playing the fight is much more creative.

And the loser can still "be on the floor" at the end of the fight. I think you should give it a try. You may change your mind ;).
